South African Coal Exports Conference 2011

February 2 – 3, 2011 – Westin Grand Cape Town Arabella Quays, Cape Town, South Africa

Sponsorship Profiles & Opportunities | Book online

South Africa coal industry continues to develop to meet domestic energy demands and the thermal coal demands of Europe and Asia. But Asia now looks to be its long term future.

With India’s thermal coal imports in 2009 recorded at 56mt the estimated imports for 2010 are set to be upwards of 76mt, South Africa is looking towards securing a large part this tonnage. Looking forward, South Africa will have the advantage over its competition when port load rates and ship draft is compared. With India’s cape capacity increasing, South Africa has strategic advantages in the competitive Asian markets.

Coal qualities are changing around the world as new coal seams come on line forcing power generators to accept different coal specifications. What flexibility do the generators really have?

How will transport constraints impact the reliability for South Africa to meet export contracts? Transnet has ongoing issues that must be resolved.

Black Empowerment, with investment returning what does the future hold. Both the Chinese and Indian coal industries are continuing to pursue supply of coals to secure continuous supply

Domestic power demand in South Africa is forecasted to grow year on year. Production from planned power plants in Sub Sahara will not come on line in time to meet this demand therefore putting additional pressure on Eskom to manage its resources and maintenance programme.
